Embodiment Construction

[0050] The following descriptions are preferred embodiments of the present invention. The following examples are only used to illustrate the technical characteristics of the present invention, and are not intended to limit the present invention. The scope of protection of the present invention should be defined by the claims.

[0051] As mentioned above, when applying motion estimation to a projected 2D plane, blocks within the current plane need to access reference data located outside the current frame. However, reference data located outside the current front may not be available. In order to improve the codec performance related to the projected 2D plane, the present invention discloses reference data generation and management techniques to improve the availability of reference data.

[0052] For any pixel in 360-degree image data, that pixel is always surrounded by some other pixels. In other words, there are no image borders or empty areas in the 360-degree image. Wh...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for coding a 360-degree VR image sequence are disclosed. According to one method, input data associated with a current image in the 360-degree VR image sequence are received andalso a target reference picture associated with the current image is received. An alternative reference picture is then generated by extending pixels from spherical neighboring pixels of one or more boundaries related to the target reference picture. A list of reference pictures including the alternative reference picture is provided for encoding or decoding the current image. When motion estimation is applied to projected 2D plane, availability of the reference is improved, and coding performance related to the projected 2D plane is improved.

Description

[0001] cross reference [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 408,870, filed October 17, 2016. This US Provisional Patent Application is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to video coding and decoding. In particular, the present invention relates to techniques for generating and managing reference images for video compression of 3D video. Background technique [0004] 360-degree video, also known as immersive video, is an emerging technology that can provide "the feeling of being there". Immersion is achieved by surrounding the user with a wrap-around scene that covers the panorama, especially a 360-degree field of view. The "sense of being there" is further improved through stereoscopic rendering. Therefore, panoramic video is widely used in virtual reality (Virtual Reality, VR) applications. However, 3D video requires a very large bandwidth for ...
