Embodiment approach
[0089] In alternative embodiments, one or more of the accessories may include features (not shown) for cutting, dissecting or biopsying tissue. Articulation of the appendages may allow the soft surgical tool 100 to cut in a preformed pattern or a pattern generated from pre-operative imaging. In alternative embodiments, one or more of the accessories may include conventional tools for tissue manipulation, such as graspers for pushing, pulling, picking, and retracting tissue, tools, and cameras in the surgical field.

A method for fabricating an attachment to a soft surgical tool is provided, comprising: receiving a set of mechanical constraints of a surgical procedure; calculating a set of joint motion states based on the set of mechanical constraints; a plurality of print commands, the accessory configured to form the set of articulation states; and printing the accessory based on the plurality of print commands. Multiple print attachments can form a directional assembly.
Description
[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Application No. 62 / 249,195, filed October 31, 2015, the contents of which are incorporated by reference in their entirety. Background technique [0003] Mechanized surgical tools for open and minimally invasive robotic surgical procedures have been developed to assist surgeons in performing surgical procedures. However, as robotic tools replace the tactile feedback that surgeons have historically relied on, the unconstrained movement of hard instruments can continue to pierce, tear and damage patient tissue during procedures. There is a need for soft surgical tools that are dexterous for the surgeon and safe for the patient. Contents of the invention [0004] A method for making an attachment to a soft surgical tool is provided, comprising: receiving a set of mechanical constraints of a surgical procedure; calculating a set of joint motion states based on the set of mechanical co...
