Abstract

The foil system used to steer the receiver arrangement and source for acquiring seismic data is attached to a buoy that supports the source and receivers. Each foil system includes a positive buoyancy device (18), a pair of control cables, a plurality of foil sections (30) and an actuator (52). The pair of control cables may be attached to the buoyancy device and extend downwardly from the buoyancy device to the submerged end. The plurality of foil sections may be positioned along the control cable between the buoyancy device (18) and the submerged end. The actuator may be configured to adjust the angle of attack of the foil segments by varying the tension in one or both of the control cables. Steering control is provided through a number of modes described by data distributed through a control system in communication with the foil system.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 242,142, filed October 15, 2015, entitled "Dynamically controlled foil systems and methods" , said application is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to dynamically controllable foil systems and methods for controlling such systems. Applications include, but are not limited to, dynamically controlled foil and hydrofoil systems configured to position and maintain the spacing between a seismic source and other elements of a marine seismic array. Background technique [0004] Seismic arrays with sources and streamers are used to study rock formations and other structures below the water surface, for example as described in U.S. Patent Publication No. 2014 / 0247691, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes Incorporated into this art...
