5329 results about "Buoyancy" patented technology

Buoyancy (/ˈbɔɪənsi, ˈbuːjənsi/) or upthrust, is an upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an immersed object. In a column of fluid, pressure increases with depth as a result of the weight of the overlying fluid. Thus the pressure at the bottom of a column of fluid is greater than at the top of the column. Similarly, the pressure at the bottom of an object submerged in a fluid is greater than at the top of the object. The pressure difference results in a net upward force on the object. The magnitude of the force is proportional to the pressure difference, and (as explained by Archimedes' principle) is equivalent to the weight of the fluid that would otherwise occupy the volume of the object, i.e. the displaced fluid.

Decussation stereo torpedo catching net

InactiveCN101226043ADoes not affect mobilityLarge effective interception areaDefence devicesPull forceDecussation
The invention relates to a crossed three-dimensional torpedo interception net capable of intercepting torpedoes, especially a torpedo interception net which can be projected or cast and can outspread automatically when entering into the water to form a decussate three-dimensional torpedo interception net. The appearance is column-shaped, a top cover is arranged at the top part and is fixed and sleeved by bayonet locks on the casing which is divided into four sections, the specific density of the top part is lighter than the seawater and the specific density of the bottom part is heavier than the seawater. A decussate bracket is arranged inside, a telescopic link is connected on the lateral side, and a suspended net is connected with the telescopic link via a hanger. When the torpedo interception net is projected or cast into sea via a surface ship, a submarine or a helicopter, the top cover is ejected via a spring, the casing is opened, a going barren dives the telescopic link to expand and the suspended net is dragged to outspread in horizontally. Under the upward pulling force of the telescopic link and the downward pulling force of the weight of the connector of the suspended net, the suspended net is outspreaded along vertical direction; a stabilization membrane connected with the inner side of the suspended net control the stability of the torpedo interception net along the vertical direction.

Method and apparatus for prevention of catheter air intake

A system is disclosed for preventing air from entering a first catheter or cannula of a multi-catheter system. Air is prevented from entering the proximal end of the first catheter by an axially elongate chamber having an impeller, the chamber being affixed to the proximal end of the first catheter. The first catheter is affixed at an offset location, near the periphery of the chamber. The impeller is driven by a motor drive and imparts rotational energy to the fluid within the chamber forcing any air within the chamber to migrate to the center of the chamber by buoyancy effects. The air is removed through a port near the centerline of the chamber. Liquid removed with the air is returned to the chamber to minimize liquid loss during the procedure. Hemostasis valves or seals can be provided at the entrance and the exit of the chamber. A second catheter inserted through the chamber and into the first catheter is unable to entrain gas into the first catheter because any gas that enters the chamber is routed to the centerline of the chamber where it is removed. The first catheter can be a cannula or an introduction sheath, devices suited for endovascular access into the mammalian cardiovascular system where pressures may fall below ambient room pressure, a condition, which could encourage the possibility of air embolism to a patient. Inflow of fluid from an external pump scrubs the second catheter shaft of air bubbles attached by surface tension.

A dissolved gas flotation apparatus and process for removing oils and other contaminants from produced water generated in the production of crude petroleum and natural gas. The invention is particularly designed for offshore applications, where space is limited and natural gas is readily available. The invention includes a vessel for receiving and maintaining a liquid level therein and a circulating pump for introducing tiny flotation gas bubbles into the vessel. Natural gas is used as a blanket gas for the vessel and as a source of gas fed into the pump, wherein the gas is mixed with the pumped liquid. The liquid/gas mixture is transferred into the vessel, wherein the gas releases from the liquid, thereby forming tiny, finely dispersed gas bubbles. The tiny gas bubbles rise vertically through the vessel and attach themselves to the oil and other contaminants suspended in the liquid and buoyantly transport the oil and other contaminants to the top of the vessel, where the gas is released and either recycled back to the recirculating pump or transferred out of the vessel for further processing, and the oil and other contaminants are collected in a reservoir for recovery. The clarified water is removed from the vessel through a liquid outlet line located near the bottom of the vessel.

Gimbal-mounted hydroelectric turbine

A power plant extracts energy from a free flowing motive fluid by means of a turbine mounted on a gimbal. The shroud element of the fluid intake has external rudders, in conjunction with the gimbal mounting, enabling the enclosed turbine to instantaneously respond to changes in the direction of the free flowing motive fluid thus ensuring the face area of the intake is always physically orthogonal to the direction of the motive fluid streamlines. The shroud element may also be buoyant so as to optimally extract energy from an upper non-turbulent and higher velocity layer of the free flowing motive fluid. To function within an inherently unsteady source of energy, the preferred embodiment of the turbine is coupled to a DC generator which may further be coupled to a voltage and current regulating circuit which either charges a battery, performs electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen fuel, or is further coupled to a DC motor coupled to an AC generator. Alternatively an AC induction generator may be coupled to the turbine. Other mechanical, electrical, electronic, or electromechanical features may optionally be implemented to perform such tasks as adaptively locating the turbine in the maximum velocity flow, adapting internal vane and runner blade pitches for various flow rates and loads, keeping the intake free of obstructions, preventing loss of aquatic life, controlling and communicating the state of charge of the battery, or gauging and controlling the electrolysis process and communicating the fullness of the hydrogen gas output tanks.
