Apparatus and method for ranging and noise reduction of low coherence interferometry lci and optical coherence tomography oct signals by parallel detection of spectral bands

InactiveUS20050018201A1Improve signal-to-noise ratioImproves current data acquisition speed and availabilityDiagnostics using lightInterferometersBandpass filteringSpectral bands
Apparatus, method, logic arrangement and storage medium are provided for increasing the sensitivity in the detection of optical coherence tomography and low coherence interferometry (“LCI”) signals by detecting a parallel set of spectral bands, each band being a unique combination of optical frequencies. The LCI broad bandwidth source can be split into N spectral bands. The N spectral bands can be individually detected and processed to provide an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio by a factor of N. Each spectral band may be detected by a separate photo detector and amplified. For each spectral band, the signal can be band p3 filtered around the signal band by analog electronics and digitized, or, alternatively, the signal may be digitized and band pass filtered in software. As a consequence, the shot noise contribution to the signal is likely reduced by a factor equal to the number of spectral bands, while the signal amplitude can remain the same. The reduction of the shot noise increases the dynamic range and sensitivity of the system.

Method and apparatus for analyzing data and advertising optimization

The most preferred embodiment of the present invention is a computer-based decision support system that includes three main components: a database mining engine (DME); an advertising optimization mechanism; and a customized user interface that provides access to the various features of the invention. The user interface, in conjunction with the DME, provides a unique and innovative way to store, retrieve and manipulate data from existing databases containing media-related audience access data, which describe the access habits and preferences of the media audience. By using a database with a simplified storage and retrieval protocol, the data contained therein can be effectively manipulated in real time. This means that previously complex and lengthy information retrieval and analysis activities can be accomplished in very short periods of time (typically seconds instead of minutes or even hours). Further, by utilizing the advertising optimization mechanism of the present invention, businesses, networks, and advertising agencies can interactively create, score, rank and compare various proposed or actual advertising strategies in a simple and efficient manner. This allows the decision-makers to more effectively tailor their marketing efforts and successfully reach the desired target market while conserving scarce advertising capital. Finally, the user interface for the system provides access to both the DME and the optimization mechanism in a simple and straightforward manner, significantly reducing training time.

Consumer-directed financial transfers using automated clearinghouse networks

Consumer directed transfers of funds over the Internet are provided by a combination of systems and networks, including the Internet, email, and the Automated Clearinghouse system (ACH). A host system provided by a funds transfer service manages requests of senders to transfer funds and further manages responses of receivers to claim funds. The host system allows the sender to initiate the funds transfer by specifying the amount of the transfer and information for contacting the receiver, without the need to specify the account of the receiver for receiving the funds. Instead, the host system contacts the receiver and informs the receiver of the available funds; the receiver can then provide the necessary target account information for completing the funds transfer. The ACH is used to effect the transfer of funds, with the host system providing instructions for ACH entries to its financial institution using account information separately received from the sender and receiver. The credit risk associated with originating ACH entries is reduced by use of the Point of Sale system to verify sufficient funds in the sender's account by comparing the closing balance of the day the funds transfer is requested with the transfer amount. Sender fraud is reduced by comparing a sender provided balance (or check number / amounts) with an account balance acquired through automated means such as the POS system or ATM network.

A network of contact centres is managed by a network management server which allows contact centres (which may be independently run from one another) to register over the Internet or an intranet. Contacts received at a contact centre which is overly busy can be transferred to a different contact centre based on a determination made by the network management unit as to the most suitable agent in the network of contact centres. The network management unit receives events messages from the various contact centres as events occur which impact on the availability of individual agents. In this way, a dynamically updated database at the network management unit can determine the most suitable agent to which a contact should be transferred. The system allows independent contact centres to act as part of a larger network of contact centres without reducing the ability of a given centre to receive and handle contacts independently of one another.

Method and apparatus for purging seals in a thermal reactor

A semiconductor processing reactor comprises a reaction chamber with a gas exhaust and a mechanical seal at one end of the chamber. The seal seals off the chamber from the ambient environment and is purged with gas to prevent diffusion of ambient gases into the reaction chamber. Because the purge gas can diffuse through the seal into the reaction chamber, the purge gas is chosen based upon the process gas and the location of the seal and exhaust so that the molecular weight of the purge gas causes the purge gas, by the force of gravity or buoyancy, to remain in the portion of the reaction chamber containing the seal and the gas exhaust. Advantageously, keeping the purge gas at the same end of the chamber as the gas exhaust minimizes dilution of the process gas with the purge gas, thereby preventing the purge gas from detrimentally effecting process results.

Remote current sensor monitoring system and GPS tracking system and method for mechanized irrigation systems

A wireless interface remote monitoring system for self-propelled irrigation systems (center pivot and lateral move sprinklers) includes a remote terminal unit (RTU) mounted on an outer drive tower of the irrigation system. The RTU includes a radio transceiver capable of sending and receiving data packets over a satellite or terrestrial telemetry backbone to and from a central control computer. The RTU further includes a current sensor and a GPS receiver both for detecting movement or non-movement of the sprinkler, a microprocessor with nonvolatile memory for storing current data and GPS coordinate data from readings taken in series over time, and a pressure or flow sensor for detecting the presence or absence of water flow at the outer drive tower of the sprinkler. The current sensor connected between the RTU and a tower drive motor, allows the RTU to calculate the “movement” or “non-movement” of the irrigation system over a specified time period. Redundantly, the GPS receiver records changes in position to indicate movement or non-movement within the GPS error tolerance. Once a change from movement to non-movement or vice-versa is determined, the RTU transmits the data by satellite or radio telemetry to a central control computer which logs the movement or non-movement of the monitored drive tower, the GPS coordinate data and the water status readings, all with time and date stamp. The central control computer creates “page message” and “text message” updates as necessary on the status of individual irrigation systems and “groups” of irrigation systems that are in turn delivered to wireless devices and computers for sprinkler operators.

Method for assessment of a coverage of a cellular network system

For assessment of a coverage of a cellular network system, in particular a CDMA cellular network system, at least one present quality value of the network system is measured at a predetermined location, under a present load of the network system. As well, at least one required quality value of the network system is determined which is required for offering a predetermined service under a predetermined load, in particular a target load, of the network system. Finally, the required quality value is compared with the measured quality value for determining whether the predetermined location is covered by the network system for the predetermined service under the predetermined load of the network system. By employing these steps, large network areas may be analyzed without influencing the traffic in the network. Reliable results are obtained without using expensive simulations depending from theoretical models and assumptions.

Implantable biosensor

The invention consists of a sensor with multiple indicating (sensing) electrodes covered with a selectively permeable membrane for monitoring fluid concentrations in a biological environment. The indicating electrodes respond to changes in certain analytes, such as glucose, through an enzyme-mediated reaction. The currents generated from the enzyme-mediated reactions are transmitted through radio signals to an external receiver where the information is processed and recorded. Through the use of various biomaterials and biochemicals associated with the sensor, the monitoring accuracy is improved and the overall viability is prolonged. The process of foreign body fibrosis (formation of a scar capsule around the implanted sensor) eventually limits the functional life of the device. We teach methods of delivery of certain biochemicals that can increase the functional life of the sensor by inhibiting the formation of the foreign body capsule or by stimulating the growth of capillaries into the capsule.

Security paper

A security paper indicates exposure to a solvent by a solvent resistant color signal. A metal mordant dye first co-reactant and a mordant dye second co-reactant form an organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product when the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The metal mordant dye first co-reactant and a mordant dye second co-reactant are chemically isolated from each other so as to prevent the coordinate covalent bond from forming until the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The chemical isolation can be effected by encapsulation or other physical separation of the co-reactants. The organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product, once formed, remains entrapped in the web when the paper is washed with an organic solvent. The chemical isolation prevents the organic solvent-insoluble colored reaction product from forming upon the application of pressure alone to the paper.
