A thrust reverser system mounted on an aircraft propulsion system typically operates in either of two discrete operating positions, which are fully stowed or fully deployed. Described herein is a thrust reverser system that autonomously modulates an actuator of a thrust reverser system across an intermediate position depending on the mode of operation. During reduced thrust operations in flight, the lock associated with the translating cowl is commanded to unlatch and the thrust reverser actuator is commanded to a mid-stroke position, thus exposing the open section of the exhaust duct to the environment through the blow-out passage. The intermediate position allows a percentage of the compressed airflow to be vented overboard for an extended duration, thus reducing the forward thrust that would otherwise be produced by expelling the airflow out of the nozzle....

Abstract

The present application discloses a thrust reverser assembly and a method of operating an aircraft during a landing approach mode of operation. The thrust reverser assembly includes a movable portion movable over a continuous range of travel between a fully stowed position and a fully deployed position. Moving away from the fully stowed position opens the exit channel. An actuator assembly connected to the movable portion is operable in an intermediate advance mode to modulate the position of the movable portion along the continuous range of travel such that airflow through the discharge channel varies correspondingly. The throttle arrangement includes a first position associated with deployment of said intermediate forward mode of operation, and a second position associated with engagement of said intermediate forward mode of operation. A trailing flap assembly is extendable from said discharge channel during said intermediate thrust forward mode of operation.
