[0026] The steering wheel angle sensor consists of a first part and a second part. The first part is stationary and is, for example, fixed to the housing. The second part is rotatably fixed to the steering wheel shaft. The first part comprises two first signal generating means 1 , 2 and two second signal generating means 3 , 4 . For this purpose, for example, the first part may comprise a transmitting coil, which is merely a circular coil around the axis of the steering wheel shaft. This transmit coil provides a substantially vertical field at the second portion. The second part is in the form of a target with a coil wound around the axis of the steering wheel shaft so that the transmitting coil induces a voltage in the target. The induced voltage is 90° ahead of the transmitting coil (i.e. the current in the transmitting coil). The target resonates in phase with its induced current and induced voltage.
