Problems solved by technology

With such high-gain beamforming, the beams are typically very narrow, making beam tracking challenging - i.e. when UEs are within and between the coverage areas of multiple beam transmission points (TRPs) (aka "send-receive points") Seek, hold and switch between appropriate beams as the two move

Embodiment Construction

[0043] According to some embodiments, one approach for robust beam management in multi-beam systems is an active BPL for ongoing transmission and reception of data and control signals and a monitored BPL for backup (standby) purposes maintenance of both. Typically, both active and monitored BPLs are updated when the UE moves and finds a new / better BPL. The maintenance of the BPL can be achieved by UE measurements and feedback to the TRP with the reception quality (strength) of a reference signal (RS) sent semi-persistently / periodically from the TRP on different beams. Furthermore, reference signal transmissions on a given TRP beam can be repeated to allow the UE the opportunity to adjust / optimize its receive (RX) beam.

[0044] Maintenance of the monitored BPL may be important for robust communication in case the active BPL is blocked by an object moving into the path of the active BPL or by an object behind which the UE moves and is obscured. Blocking is common at high freq...

Abstract

Some embodiments of this disclosure provide a method (700) performed by one or more transmission points, TRPs (150, 950), for communicating with a user equipment, UE (101). In some embodiments, the method includes: using (s702) a first transmit, TX, beam (102) to communicate with the UE (101); receiving (s704), from the UE (101), information indicating that the UE (101) has determined that the first TX beam (102) has experienced a beam failure; and after the information is received, using (s706) a second TX beam (104) to communicate with the UE (101).

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments for handling beam failures are disclosed. Background technique [0002] The next-generation mobile wireless communication system called "5G" will support a diverse set of use cases and a diverse set of deployment scenarios. 5G will encompass the evolution of today's 4G networks with the addition of a new globally standardized radio access technology called "New Radio" (NR). [0003] The diverse set of deployment scenarios includes deployments in both low frequencies (100 MHz) and very high frequencies (tens of GHz mm wave) similar to current LTE. At high frequencies, the propagation characteristics make achieving good coverage challenging. One solution to the coverage problem is to use high-gain beamforming to achieve a satisfactory link budget. With such high-gain beamforming, the beams are typically very narrow, making beam tracking challenging - i.e. when UEs are within and between the coverage areas of multiple beam transmission poin...
