Problems solved by technology

In use, however, the piston rod may overtravel past the design-intended retracted position, and this overtravel may result in undesired overpressure, damage to the gas spring, and / or other adverse conditions
Rapid return of the piston rod from the overtravel position can also damage forming equipment and / or workpieces using gas springs

Embodiment Construction

[0022] Referring to the attached drawings for more details, figure 1 Shown is a gas spring 10 that may be used in forming equipment such as sheet metal stamping dies and mechanical presses (not shown). In general, the gas spring 10 may include a housing 12 , a guide and seal assembly 14 carried by the housing 12 , a piston rod 16 carried by the housing 12 and extending through the guide and seal assembly 14 , and a pressure chamber 17 . In use, the outer axial end of the piston rod 16 may engage or be engaged by a die member or another part of a press or part of a forming apparatus (not shown).

[0023] For example, in various embodiments, one or more of the gas springs 10 may be used in a forming apparatus to provide a movable member for supporting a forming die or workpiece with yield or return forces. For example, in a binder ring embodiment, the gas spring 10 may provide a yield force against the binder ring of a forming die to hold a metal workpiece while another portion...

Abstract

A gas spring for a forming apparatus may have: a housing having axially extending side walls, an open end, and a closed end wall, wherein the wall portions define a pressure chamber for receiving pressurized gas; a bearing assembly received in the housing; a piston rod slidably received in a bearing assembly for reciprocating movement between an extended position and a retracted position; a piston retainer received in the housing and separate from and generally carried by the piston rod a deforming member in the housing adjacent the closed end wall of the housing and configured to plastically deform the retainer when the piston rod is forced into the pressure chamber to an overtravel retracted position beyond its design-intended maximum retracted position deformation, and after this overtravel, the piston rod returns to at least its extended position, and the deformation retainer engages the bearing assembly, and fractures and separates from the piston rod.

Description

[0001] This is a provisional patent application under 35 USC §111(b). technical field [0002] The present invention relates generally to gas springs, and more particularly to an overtravel release feature of a gas spring. Background technique [0003] Gas springs are well known and have been used in dies of presses for sheet metal stamping operations. For example, gas springs can be used as pressure pads in many other types of applications. A conventional gas spring may include a housing, a piston rod carried in the housing, a bearing and seal housing held in the housing by a retainer for guiding and retaining the piston rod within the housing, and in some applications a A pressure chamber maintained at an operating pressure of, for example, 1,500 to 3,000 PSI with pressurized gas, usually nitrogen. The housing includes one or more bearings for guiding movement of the piston rod within the housing, and one or more seals for preventing leakage from the pressure chamber. T...
