Problems solved by technology

[0005] However, the implementation of the carrier sense design in US 7,876,770 is complex and will consume a lot of power
Therefore, they are not well suited for low-power applications such as small battery-operated wireless sensors based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard (e.g., Zigbee TM Temperature Sensor)

Embodiment Construction

[0038] figure 1 A wireless heart rate monitor 1 and a smartphone 2 are shown. Each device 1, 2 comprises a transceiver embodying the invention and communicating with each other using the IEEE 802.15.4 communication protocol. In other examples, however, devices 1, 2 may communicate with each other using different radio communication protocols, such as Bluetooth Low Energy.

[0039] Specifically, the smartphone 2 has, among other conventional components (not shown), an RF antenna 4 connected to a transceiver 3 . The RF antenna 4 is configured to receive radio waves 5 and 6 and convert them into electrical signals. Preferably, antenna 4 receives radio waves 5 that have been modulated to transmit IEEE 802.15.4 compliant data packets from wireless heart rate monitor 1 . However, antenna 4 may additionally or alternatively receive background radio waves 6 from other sources of radiation, such as other smartphones with which it is not desired to communicate, or other devices that ...

Abstract

A radio receiver (5) arranged to receive radio signals. The radio receiver (5) comprises: a tuner (4), which outputs an electronic signal representing radio waves received by the radio receiver; a correlator (18), the correlator ( 18) Cross-correlating a predetermined signal pattern with said electronic signal, and outputting a correlated signal; and a clear channel assessment module (22). The clear channel assessment module determines when a number of peaks in the correlation signal exceeds a threshold count value within a fixed time window, and outputs a busy signal in response to determining that the number of peaks exceeds the threshold count value.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and a device for performing Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) in a radio receiver. Background technique [0002] Known radio receivers or transceivers check whether a particular radio channel is free. This may be done to detect the start of an incoming radio transmission intended for the receiver. This may be done to determine if the channel is free before starting to transmit on the channel itself. In the first case, the radio may need to perform this check constantly, or even continuously, so that it does not miss the start of the incoming data signal. In the second case, the radio may only need to perform the check shortly before intending to transmit, for example in a so-called "listen-before-talk" protocol. [0003] Such testing, or "clear channel assessment (CCA)", is typically performed by detecting radio energy above a certain threshold in a particular frequency band. However, a radio receiver can also...
