Abstract

Various embodiments of a surgical end effector are provided. The end effector can include upper and lower jaws, and an anvil assembly configured to be releasably coupled to the upper and / or lower jaws. The anvil assembly can include an anvil plate that mates and aligns with the jaw, and staple pockets that align with staple cavities formed in the cartridge for formed staples fired from the cartridge. An adjunct material can be releasably secured to either the cartridge or anvil assembly, such as with one or more sutures.

Description

technical field [0001] Methods and apparatus are provided for securing one or more excipient materials to an end effector of a surgical instrument. Background technique [0002] Surgical staplers are used in surgery to close openings in tissue, blood vessels, catheters, shunts, or other objects or body parts involved in a particular procedure. These openings may be naturally occurring, such as passages in blood vessels or internal organs like the stomach, or they may be formed by the surgeon during surgery, such as by puncturing tissue or blood vessels to create bypasses or anastomoses or by Cutting the tissue during the suturing procedure. [0003] Most staplers have a handle with an elongated shaft with an end effector having a pair of movable opposing jaws for engaging and stapling tissue. The staples are typically housed in a staple cartridge that can hold rows of staples and is typically disposed in one of the jaws for ejecting the staples to the surgical site. In us...
