Abstract

A method, apparatus, system, and article of manufacture for evaluating and selecting a network for transmitting messages from an aircraft are disclosed. An example device includes a message analyzer that determines an allowable delay associated with a first message to be transmitted during the flight based on a message type. The apparatus includes: a map data analyzer for generating a forecast of network availability associated with transmission of the first message based on network map data collected during a previous flight; and a target network determiner for determining network availability based on the forecast of network availability A target network for transmitting the first message is determined, wherein the target network has a predicted availability within an allowable delay during the current flight. The apparatus includes a message outputter that outputs a first message through a target network before a permissible delay in response to the target network being available.
