Embodiment Construction

[0039] Various embodiments of the invention relate to techniques for handling overlays inserted in video streams delivered by surveillance cameras. The VMS receives position information for the overlay in a video stream (typically a wide-angle or "fisheye" video stream). The received position information is used to exclude overlays from any dewarping operations performed by the VMS on individual images in the video stream. Using location information to exclude overlays can be done in a number of different ways. Finally, after dewarping by VMS, the overlay is applied to the image in the video stream, resulting in a readable overlay as well as a visually pleasing appearance of the overlay.

[0040] The present invention will now be described in further detail by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings. figure 1 An image frame 100 is shown captured by a surveillance camera using a wide angle lens. Image frame 100 is one of many frames that together form ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to correcting image overlays. Methods and apparatus including computer program products implementing and using techniques for displaying video. A video stream comprising a plurality of image frames, at least some of which include overlays, is received by a video management system. The video management system determines the location of the overlay within the image frame. The video management system applies image adjustment functions to the image frames to create adjusted image frames. The image adjustment function adjusts the image using the determined position of the overlay while leaving the appearance of the overlay substantially unchanged, and a video stream including the adjusted image frames is displayed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to video systems, and more particularly to handling overlays inserted in video streams delivered by surveillance cameras. Background technique [0002] Surveillance cameras are used in many different applications both indoors and outdoors to monitor various environments. Many surveillance cameras have the possibility to insert overlays into the video stream delivered by the camera. The overlay is usually some kind of text-based information from the camera, such as a timestamp, date, etc. Other types of overlay information may include data from external sensors or devices, such as temperature, wind speed, or humidity. Still other types of overlay information may include text that has been stored in the camera by someone with access to the camera. [0003] Surveillance cameras are usually controlled and managed by some kind of video management system (VMS). Typically, overlays are not sent separately to the VMS, but are ...
