Abstract

The invention provides a circuit and a power distribution unit supplying power to a load. The circuit comprises an output connector connectable to a load. A relay selectively connects the output connector to an AC power source. The relay is responsive to a disabling signal to disconnect the output connector from the AC power source. A sensor senses a level of power delivered to the load via the output connector. A detector emits a first fault signal when the sensed power level exceeds a fixed power limit. A latch maintains the first fault signal until it receives a rearm signal. A controller emits a second fault signal when the sensed power level exceeds a configurable power threshold, receives a user command to rearm the circuit, and in response to receiving the user command, emits the rearm signal and ceases the emission of the second fault signal. A logic combiner generates the disabling signal when it receives one of the first and second fault signals.

Description

technical field [0001] This technology relates to electronic power supplies. Specifically, a circuit implementing an AC smart fuse for a power distribution unit is disclosed. Background technique [0002] Large-scale networks for cloud computing, search engines, and similar applications often include tens or hundreds of servers for load sharing and for redundancy. These networks need to be highly scalable, requiring frequent additions of more servers to the network infrastructure. [0003] Large-scale server networks consume very large amounts of power and generate large amounts of heat. Any way of reducing power consumption is desirable. [0004] Many servers in a large scale server network require AC power. In the event of a failure, such as a short circuit, fuses and / or relays may be used to cut off AC power delivery to the server. Fuses, however, are generally slow to react and must be replaced after a short circuit. Relays protect servers from short circuits and c...
