The system consists of a motor vehicle (2) and a handheld device (8), wherein the motor vehicle (2) has an infotainment system (6) with a mounting bracket (10) for the handheld device (8). The mounting bracket (10) is located in front of the display screen (12) of the infotainment system (6). The method includes following steps: insertingthe handheld device (8) into the bracket (10) and identifying the handheld device (8); reading the image data set for screen output on the display screen (12) of the infotainment system (6); formingpart of the image data set based on the image data set, and transferring the part of the image data set for screen output on the display screen (14) of the handheld device (8); forming a residual image data set based on the image data set, and transferring the residual image data set for screen output on the display screen (12) of the infotainment system (6).
