The invention provides a character segmentation method and device and a computer readable storage medium. The character segmentation method comprises the steps: obtaining a character area image, and converting the character area image into a grayscale image, wherein the character area image comprises at least one character frame; converting the grayscale image into an edge binary image by using anedge detection algorithm; obtaining character frame segmentation blocks from the edge binary image by using a projection method; and determining a target character region from the character frame segmentation blocks by using a contour detection algorithm, and performing character segmentation on the character area image according to the target character region. By means of the method and device,character segmentation can be conducted on the image with low quality, and the problem that the segmentation limit is difficult to determine in the character segmentation process is solved.
