Abstract

The vehicle door latch device according to the present invention is provided with: a latch that is rotatable from an unlatched position to a fully latched excessive rotation position by engaging witha striker; a ratchet member that is locked by a ratchet shaft, that has a pawl portion for allowing shift between a latch engagement position where the ratchet member can face a full latch engagementportion of the latch and a latch disengagement position where the ratchet member is not engaged with the full latch engagement portion, and that is pushed out from the latch engagement position to thelatch disengagement position by a release component force, in a latch disengagement direction, generated in association with application of a latch returning force in an unlatch direction while the ratchet member is in the latch engagement position; and a ratchet retainer that is disposed on a lateral side of the ratchet member and that can be shifted, about a pin, between a block position for abutting against the ratchet member so as to restrict shift of the ratchet member from the latch engagement position to the latch disengagement position due to the release component force and a releaseposition for separating away from the ratchet member so as to allow shift of the ratchet member from the latch engagement position to the latch disengagement position, wherein the ratchet member has apawl lever that, in a state where the ratchet retainer is in the blocked position, can separate away from the full latch engagement portion by turning around a coupling shaft toward the latch disengagement direction.
