Embodiment Construction

[0036] Referring to the accompanying drawings, especially figure 1 and figure 2 , shows an embodiment of a system 100 for measuring and detecting forces on an anthropomorphic test device 102 according to the present invention. In the example shown, the ATD 102 is a 50% male type and is shown in a seated position. It should be understood that the present invention will apply to all types and sizes of ATDs 102 .

[0037]In one embodiment, the ATD 102 is primarily used to test the performance of the automotive interior and restraint system 100 for adult front and rear seat passengers. ATD 102 dimensions and weights are based on an anthropometric study, usually conducted separately by: University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), U.S. Military Anthropometry Survey (ANSUR ) and the Civilian American and European Surface Anthropometry Resource (CESAR). It should be appreciated that the range of motion, center of gravity, and segmental mass simulate the rang...

Abstract

A system for detecting forces on and measuring deformation of an anthropomorphic test device (ATD) includes a plurality of body parts and at least one optical fiber supported by and in contact with atleast one of the body parts. The body parts form the ATD and simulate at least a part of a human body and the articulation of the human body. The optical fiber extends between a first end and a second end and comprises a plurality of sensors disposed between the ends. An emitter is in communication with the optical fiber for emitting a light having a predetermined band of wavelengths through theoptical fiber that is reflected by the sensors and an interrogator is in communication with the optical fiber for detecting the reflected light from the sensor such that changes to the reflected lightindicate a strain on the at least one body part.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 621,388, filed January 24, 2018, which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to anthropomorphic test devices and, more particularly, to a fiber optic system for detecting forces on an anthropomorphic test device and measuring deformation thereof. Background technique [0004] Automobile, aerospace and other vehicle manufacturers conduct a variety of crash tests to measure the effects of a crash on the vehicle and its occupants. Through crash testing, vehicle manufacturers gain valuable information that can be used to improve vehicles. [0005] Crash testing typically involves the use of an anthropomorphic test device (ATD), often referred to as a "crash test dummy". During a crash test, an ATD is placed inside a vehicle, and the vehicle is subjected to a simulated crash (a sled test) or a physical...
