Problems solved by technology

The device of US2016 / 0231108 may be suitable for a limited number of "on-machine" surface finish measurements (e.g. measurements of the inner surface of a hole), but there are still many different surface orientations on a typical machined part that simply cannot be used This device measures

Embodiment Construction

[0044] Referring to FIG. 1 , a prior art profilometer is schematically shown. The profilometer comprises a housing 2 from which an elongate shaft 4 with a longitudinal axis L extends. The contact element 6 extends perpendicularly in the direction P from the axis 4 . The housing 2 includes a one-way transducer (not shown) which measures any deflection of the shaft 4 caused by the back and forth movement of the contact element 6 in the direction P. As shown in FIG.

[0045] In use, the contact element 6 comes into contact with the surface of the object 10 . The contact element 6 is then moved relative to the object 10 in a direction M, which is parallel to the longitudinal axis L. As shown in FIG. This relative movement between the object 10 and the profilometer may be imposed by moving the profilometer (for example by linearly retracting / extending the axis 4), the object 10, or both the object and the profilometer. The result of the relative movement is that the contact elem...

Abstract

A surface finish stylus (50; 190) for a multi-directional scanning probe (22) is described. The stylus has an elongate stylus shaft (52; 120; 140) having a longitudinal axis (L) and one or more contact elements (56; 124,126; 144, 146, 148; 196, 198) protruding from the elongate shaft (52; 120; 140) for contacting a surface (70,72) to be measured. The one or more contact elements (56; 124,126; 144,146, 148; 196, 198) are configured to enable measurement of surface finish during motion of the stylus shaft (52; 120; 140) relative to a surface (70,72) along a measurement direction (Ml, M2; M3) that is non-parallel to the longitudinal axis (L). The multi-directional scanning probe (22) may be carried by a coordinate measuring machine or machine tool. Associated methods are also described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to surface finish styli, and more particularly to surface finish styli for use with multi-directional machine tool scanning probes for measuring surface roughness or surface waviness of machined parts. Background technique [0002] Often workpieces are measured after they have been machined to ensure they meet specific required standards. In particular, it is known to measure the shape and / or surface finish of a workpiece which has been machined by a machine tool. While the topography of machined parts is routinely measured "on-machine" using scanning probes carried in the spindle of a machine tool used to cut workpieces, the surface finish (e.g., surface roughness) of such parts is typically measured using a dedicated surface finish instrument for "off-machine" measurements. [0003] A typical profilometer includes an elongated shaft with a workpiece-contacting tip extending perpendicularly from the distal end of the sh...
