Embodiment Construction

[0037] figure 1 A magnetic core 20 suitable for use in one embodiment of the invention is shown. The magnetic core is in the shape of a rectangular cylinder and may, for example, be 8 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 1 inch thick. Magnetic core 20 may be constructed of a relatively inexpensive ferromagnetic material such as powdered metal, cast iron, silicon steel or carbon steel.

[0038]A coil 22 is shown wound around the magnetic core 20 . For the sake of illustration, the winding of the coils is rarely shown. In fact, in a practical embodiment, the number of turns could be hundreds of turns. The winding axis of the coil 22 coincides with the major axis of the magnetic core 20 . Coil 22 has terminals 24 and 26 through which coil 22 may be connected to a driver circuit (not shown). Of course, a suitable housing (not shown) could be fitted around the core 20 and coil 22.

[0039] When the coil 22 is excited, the magnetic core 20 forms a two-pole magnet having a length d...

Abstract

A device (50) for deactivating a magnetomechanical EAS marker includes a coil (64, 66, 68, 70) and circuitry (72) for energizing the coil to generate an alternating magnetic field. The coil is wound around a magnetic core (52). The core may be cruciform with four arms, on each of which a respective coil is provided. Alternatively, the core may be generally square and planar, with two coils (102, 104) wound around the core (100) in different respective directions.

Description

[0001] This application is a continuation-in-part of co-pending application Serial No. 08 / 794,012 filed February 3,1997. technical field [0002] This invention relates generally to Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) and is more particularly suited to so-called "deactivators" for use in deactivating EAS markings. Background technique [0003] In the Electronic Article Surveillance industry, EAS markings are commonly applied to merchandise. The detection device located at the exit of the mall detects the activation sign trying to move out of the mall and in this case generates an alarm. When a customer presents merchandise to pay at the checkout counter, the cashier deactivates the token by using a deactivation device provided to deactivate the token. [0004] Known deactivation devices include one or more coils which are energized to generate a magnetic field of sufficient amplitude to deactivate the marker. One well-known type of label (disclosed in US Patent No. 4,510...
