Abstract

A method for enabling operation of an aerosol-generating device (102), the method comprising, at the aerosol-generating device (102): determining whether an operation enabling message (1518a) held by the aerosol-generating device is valid or invalid, and if the operation enabling message (1518a) held by the aerosol-generating device is determined to be valid, enabling the operation, and if the operation enabling message (1518a) held by the aerosol-generating device is not valid, enabling the operation. At a personal computing device (104), attempting to obtain a server-generated operation enable message (1518b), transmitting the server-generated operation enable message (1518b) to the aerosol-generating device (102) if the server-generated operation enable message (1518b) is obtained, and transmitting the server-generated operation enable message (1518b) to the aerosol-generating device (102) if the server-generated operation enable message (1518b) is not obtained. If so, generating a personal computing device generated operation enable message (1518c) and transmitting the personal computing device operation enable message (1518c) to the aerosol-generating device (102); and the aerosol-generating device (102) uses either the server-generated operational enable message (1518b) or the personal computing device operational enable message (1518c) received from the personal computing device (104) as an operational enable message (1518a) held by the aerosol-generating device, where when used as the operational enable message (1518a) held by the aerosol-generating device, the aerosol-generating device (102) receives the operational enable message (1518b) generated by the server or the personal computing device operational enable message (1518c) from the personal computing device (104).
