Abstract

A spacing device for use with a metered dose inhaler (MDI). The spacer device includes an aerosol chamber for containing an aerosolized medicament ejected from the MDI. According to one particular design, an aerosol chamber has a front shell, a rear shell, and a retractable barrel therebetween. The telescopic cylinder includes a flexible plastic sheath supported by a helical spring. The spacing device also includes a mounting bracket for holding the MDI. The mounting bracket fixes the MDI such that the spray outlet of the MDI cooperates with the aerosol chamber. Moreover, the assembly is configured such that the aerosol chamber is aligned substantially parallel to the actuator cover of the MDI. During use, the aerosol chamber is folded down away from the MDI. The aerosol chamber then extends outwardly to increase its volume.

Background technique [0002] Metered dose inhalers (MDIs) are used to administer medications, such as bronchodilators and corticosteroids, to the lungs.
