When a user (18a) moves outside the first motor vehicle (16c), the user carries a first identification key (22a) (S2). When a first identification key piece (22a) enters a reception area (30a) of a short-range transceiver unit (24a), position data of the first identification key piece is determined and the position data is transmitted by a remote transceiver unit (26a) not arranged in the first identification key piece (22a) (S4). The recipient of the transmitted position data thereby determines a motion vector for the first identification key piece. It is then checked whether the determined motion vector satisfies at least one preadjusted, presettable activation criterion for activating at least one component of the motor vehicle (S8).
