Embodiment Construction

[0010] The subject matter of various aspects of the technology is specifically described herein to satisfy statutory requirements. However, the description itself is not intended to limit the scope of this patent. Rather, the inventors have contemplated that the claimed subject matter may also be embodied in other ways, to include different steps or combinations of steps similar to those described herein, as well as other existing or future technologies. Furthermore, although the terms "step" and / or "block" may be used herein to refer to various elements of a method employed, these terms should not be construed to imply a difference among or between the various steps disclosed herein. Any specific order unless and except when the order of the various steps is explicitly described.

Abstract

The techniques described herein help improve email security within a multi-tenant email service. In particular, the techniques described herein help make a first tenant of the email service more difficult to pretenant a second tenant of the email service by verifying the transmit domain prior to the email leaving the multi-tenant email service. In particular, the techniques run sending-side source verification on the email. If the source verification fails, the email still will be sent, but the source IP address used will cause the email not to pass a recipient-side email authentication test, such as a sender policy framework (SPF) email authentication test. In contrast, if the source verification is passed, the email is sent using a source IP address that will cause the email to pass the recipient-side email authentication test.

Description

Background technique [0001] Cloud computing platforms may provide users with the ability to build, deploy, and manage services and applications in a distributed computing environment (ie, the cloud). When the cloud computing platform is provided by a cloud service provider, the tenants of the cloud computing platform do not need to provide or maintain their own infrastructure, thereby allowing the tenants of the cloud computing platform to rapidly deploy services and applications. Some resources of the cloud computing platform can be shared by tenants. For example, tenants in a multi-tenant email infrastructure can share IP addresses because the same server provides services to multiple tenants. However, this can lead to some tenant abuse of the cloud computing platform, such as sending unwanted or malicious emails from the platform. Unwanted email can waste machine resources, such as inbox storage. Unwanted email can be a vehicle for computer viruses to enter a computer, t...
