Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for controlling a fluid volume in a well system having a riser (7) extending from a well to a drilling rig. The riser (7) has a diameter increasing member (1) located below the upper end of the riser (7) and above any sliding joint (12) in the riser. The device further comprises a sensor (5) for continuously measuring the position of the sliding joint (12), the diameter increasing part (1) being connected to an outlet (19) in fluid communication with the fluid return system (18), the device further comprising a return pump (2) connected between the outlet (19) and the slurry return system (18), the outlet (19) being arranged at a position lower than the slurry return system (18), and the return pump (2) being arranged at a position lower than the slurry return system (18). A liquid level sensor (22) measures the liquid level within the diameter increasing member (1).
