Embodiment Construction

[0024] The fingerprint sensor module 100 ( figure 1 ) a microlens array 104 with microlenses 102, in this embodiment a 2x3 array. In other embodiments, it is contemplated that the microlens array may have other numbers of lenses, such as 3x3, 3x6, 4x4, 4x8, 6x6, 6x8, 6x10 or larger lenses array. The microlenses 102 of the microlens array 104 are surrounded by a black mask 106 . The lens array 104 and black mask 106 are mounted on a transparent backing plate ( figure 2 208) in the top, the transparent backing plate is mounted on top of the image sensor integrated circuit 108, which in some embodiments may also include other functions, such as processor and memory functions. The image sensor integrated circuit 108 may be mounted directly to the processor printed circuit board of a cell phone or other fingerprint activation unit in some embodiments, or may be mounted to a flexible printed circuit 110 that extends beyond the integrated circuit 108 in other embodiments, thus I...

Abstract

A multi-lens optical fingerprint reader that may be adapted to read a fingerprint through a display and a method of verifying an identity of a user are provided. The multi-lens optical fingerprint reader has an image sensor integrated circuit with one or more photosensor arrays; a backing plate; and a plurality of lenses in a microlens array, each lens of the plurality of lenses focusing light reaching the lens from a finger adjacent to the display through the backing plate to form an image on an associated photosensor on the photosensor array of the integrated circuit. The method includes illuminating a finger of a user with an OLED display; focusing light from the fingerprint onto a photosensor array of the integrated circuit through an array microlens, reading the array to form an overlapping electronic fingerprint image; a feature is extracted from the overlapping electronic fingerprint image or from the stitched fingerprint image and compared to a feature of at least one user in a library of features associated with one or more fingers of the one or more authorized users.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a multi-lens optical fingerprint reader that can be adapted to read fingerprints through a display, a method of verifying the identity of a user, and a method of manufacturing a fingerprint reader. Background technique [0002] Many modern cell phone operating systems, including Apple iOS and Android, can be configured to use biometrics, such as fingerprints, as an alternative for the user to enter an unlock code to authenticate the user's identity. Existing optical sensors for reading fingerprints use an electronic camera equipped with a single lens and an image sensor with a single photosensor array to image the fingerprint surface of a finger through an OLED phone display. To image a reasonable area of the finger, the lens and photosensor array are large, and a considerable amount of space is required between the lens and photosensor array - which creates a problem in the limited available space of a cell phone. ...
