Embodiment Construction

[0019] Referring now to the drawings, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the various views, the garage door roller system of the present invention is generally indicated at 10 . As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 , each roller system 10 includes a roller 12 rotatably mounted on a race 14 of a shaft 16 . A plurality of roller systems 10 are mounted on the inner surface 18 of the garage door 20 along each side such that the raceways of the axles extend outside of each side 22 of the door 20 and the position of each roller 12 is away from the door. The sides 22 of 20 are substantially equidistant from each other. The rollers 12 on each side of the garage door 20 are in rolling engagement with and are supported by one of a pair of fixed L-shaped guides 24 . The L-shape of the L-shaped guide allows the door 20 to move upwardly from a substantially vertical closed position to a substantially horizontal open position.

Abstract

A garage door roller assembly includes a one-piece, unitary shaft (16) and a one-piece, unitary roller (12), each composed of a polymeric material and a washer (94) and a pin (70), each composed of case-hardened steel. The roller includes a sleeve portion (52) having an axial bore (64), a wheel portion (5 6) and a web (58) extending radially from the wheel portion to the sleeve portion. The shaft includes an axial bore (32), a mounting portion (34), and a race portion (14). The race portion is rotatably mounted within the bore of the sleeve portion of the roller. The pin includes a head (72) and a stem (74) which extends axially from the head through the opening of the washer into t he bore of the shaft. A knurled segment (80) of the stem frictionally engages t he bore of the shaft.

Description

technical field [0001] In general, the present invention relates to rolling doors or upward moving swing doors. In particular, the present invention relates to roller systems for garage swing doors. Background technique [0002] Overhead doors that move upwards are commonly used as garage doors, and such doors have traditionally been constructed using a plurality of door assemblies that are hinged together. Such drop doors are typically supported on a pair of L-shaped guides that allow the door to move upwardly from a substantially vertical closed position to a substantially horizontal open position. To enable this opening and closing movement, the garage door is provided with a plurality of roller bearing units located adjacent the sides of the door. The rollers of each roller support unit are in rolling engagement with, and are supported by, a stationary L-shaped guide. Typically the roller support unit also includes a pair of butt hinges which are oppositely secured to...
