Abstract

The present invention recovers data utilizing information from previously received data packets to reconstruct a data packet with an ever increasing probability of reconstructing the actually transmitted data packet. With each new reception, the accumulated information brings the receiver closer to obtaining the actually transmitted data packet. This use of information which might otherwise be discarded permits highly efficient and effective bit error correction particularly useful in hostile communications environments by transceivers with limited data processing and / or memory ressources.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to the fields of data processing and communications, and in particular to the recovery of data sent over a communications channel and retrieved from memory. Background technique [0002] In digital data systems, it is not uncommon for data stored in memory and data sent over communication channels to be corrupted by errors. The techniques generally used to detect errors and / or correct detected errors vary. One example of an error detection technique is the well known cyclic redundancy code (CRC) check. Others use techniques such as block codes and convolutional codes for simultaneous error detection and error correction. Additional coding bits are added to the data bits for error detection and correction. When data is received from the communication channel or retrieved from memory, the received or retrieved data is decoded in the same manner with additional bits to detect if some data is in error. One way to think ...
