Abstract

A method for locking contacts in an automatic transfer switch is provided. The automatic transfer switch includes a plurality of pole units including a plurality of contact pairs. The method includes mounting an interior locking device in at least one pole unit and locking at least one contact pair individually with the interior locking device housed in that contact pair's pole unit.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to electrical switches, and more particularly to automatic transfer switches. Background technique [0002] Many businesses use transfer switches to automatically switch power within second-tier operations, such as from utility power to dedicated second-tier power. Critical load units such as hospitals, airport radar towers, and high-capacity data centers rely on automatic transfer switches to provide continuous power. Typically transfer switches use multiple contacts that can be opened or closed. [0003] It is generally desirable for a transfer switch to remain closed during a fault or overcurrent condition. In a fault condition, the large and rapid influx of electrical energy results in a blow-off force between the contacts. Therefore, if not locked together, the contacts will interfere with upstream protective devices (ie, circuit breakers) and disrupt coordination between the devices. Known transfer switches in...
