Embodiment Construction

[0030] The present invention proposes to capture an image of a fiber on a pulley of a drawing or fiber drawing device used to limit polarization mode dispersion, thereby determining the position of the fiber relative to the pulley, and then deduce the rotation applied to the fiber from the obtained image. The image is analyzed to determine the precise position of the fiber on the pulley, thereby determining the angle between the fiber and the pulley. Thus, the torsional force applied to the fiber can be deduced from the latter information. The method means that no special alignment hardware is required and can be used continuously throughout the fiber manufacturing process. And, without complicated calculations, it is applicable to all types of swinging motions.

Abstract

Controlling polarization mode dispersion of an optical fiber during fiber fabrication involves applying torsion to the fiber with an oscillating pully (10) by displacement of the fiber relative to member, capturing image of the fiber and the member produced by sensors (14), analyzing the image by analyzer circuit (18) to determine the position of fiber relative to the member; and calculating the torsion applied to the fiber. An Independent claim is included for an optical fiber drawing installation.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application is based on French patent application No. 02 16 890 filed December 31, 2002, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] This invention relates to optical fibers, and more particularly to reducing the polarization mode dispersion of these optical fibers during the manufacturing process. Background technique [0004] In an ideal toroidal single-mode fiber, there are two polarization modes: If the fiber is toroidal, these two modes propagate along the fiber with the same phase velocity. However, any asymmetry in the fiber, such as that caused by a non-ringed core, will introduce a difference between the phase vectors of the two eigenmodes, which is called birefringence. The birefringence of a fiber is measured using a parameter called polarization mode dispersion, which represents the dispersion introduced in a signal due to the fiber's birefringence. Not only singl...
