Embodiment approach

[0013] The present invention is directed to a mechanism for informing mobile users that specified features, such as shortened international access code dialing (plus code dialing), are not supported by the serving network. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a cellular network slave characteristic for operation in accordance with the TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) IS-136 Rev A digital wireless standard specified by the Electronics Industries Association and Telecommunications Industries Association (EIA / TIA) described above. However, those skilled in the art will recognize that the present invention is applicable to other TDMA-based standards, such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Personal Digital Cellular (PDC). For simplicity, the term mobile terminal will be simply referred to as terminal hereinafter.

Abstract

The present invention sets forth a technique for notifying subscribers operating on a visiting cellular telecommunication network of service features not supported by said networks. The invention is particularly useful for warning roaming subscribers unfamiliar with the availability of supported service features such as abbreviated dialling for international access codes, also known as Plus Code dialling. In an embodiment of the invention, the roaming terminal reads the broadcast information on control channel of the visiting network. The broadcast information contains a Service Menu Message that includes a plurality of Information Elements (IE) that characterizes the service features supported by the network, including Plus Code diallling. If the Plus Code Dialling is not supported, and the subscriber attempts to use the service feature by entering, e.g., the ''+'' key in the digit string, a predetermined notification message is immediatly displayed on the terminal indicating that the feature is not supported.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates generally to cellular telecommunication networks and, more particularly, to a method and system for providing feedback to users about the support of service features in unfamiliar cellular telecommunication networks. Background of the invention [0002] Many cellular telecommunications equipment manufacturers market their equipment to network operators, often in core packaging, enabling the operator to provide basic cellular services to its subscribers. In addition, at the operator's request, value-added features can be included in the package to provide a number of enhanced services that may be welcomed by users. Operators often tend to include various value-added features as a way of differentiating themselves from competitors. As a result, these marketing techniques for attracting new subscribers often lead to an environment where popular features eventually become standard, eg, caller ID and vo...
