Problems solved by technology

Regardless of the exact GOP structure used, such B pictures cannot be properly decoded without adjacent I and P pictures, so B pictures cannot be accessed at will
Likewise, a P-picture cannot be properly decoded without referring to the immediately preceding I-picture in the bitstream.
This difficulty poses particular problems using editing functions on recordable DVDs, since it means that certain pictures within the bitstream cannot be executably separated from adjacent pictures.

Embodiment Construction

[0027] Recordable DVD device

[0028] The device 100 exemplified here for implementing various advanced operating functions according to the inventive scheme uses the rewritable disk medium 102 according to the inventive scheme described in the block diagram of FIG. 1 . The rewritable disc medium 102 is used as a rewritable DVD in the illustrated embodiment. In many of the examples described subsequently, the rewritable disk medium may also be, for example, a hard disk or a magneto-optical disk (MOD). An example of a MOD is a minidisc. In many instances, the solutions of the present invention can be applied to video, or audio, or both video and audio.

[0029] Device 100 can write to and read from disk media, which in this example is a rewritable DVD 102 . The device includes a mechanical assembly 104 , a control portion 120 , a video / audio input processing path 140 and a video / audio output processing path 170 . The arrangement of most of the bl...

Abstract

A method and device for editing to a picture a group of pictures (GOP) in a DVD media without decoding and encoding of an MPEG encoded signal. The method includes the steps of: marking a user selected end picture to identify a selected segment of the encoded signal to be edited; automatically identifying an actual end picture for the selected segment based on a position of the user selected end picture relative to at least one other picture within the encoded signal; and performing an edit function on an actual segment delimited by the actual end picture.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a method for providing advanced operational functions to audio programs, video programs and both audio and video programs recorded on disc media such as recordable digital video discs, hard disks, and magneto-optical discs and device. Background technique [0002] Various devices have been developed that enable customers to record video and / or audio programs for later playback. Such devices include tape recorders, video tape recorders, recordable compact discs, and most commonly, recordable digital video discs (DVDs). Hard disks and magneto-optical disks are also used. [0003] A record-once DVD is essentially a DVD read-only memory, acronym DVD-R. The acronym DVD-R can also generally refer to write-once, or record-once technology. There are several formats that can be used for recording, erasing or re-recording of DVDs; ie overwrite or rewrite. These are denoted by the acronyms D...
