Centrally located, eg, at a central office, is a voicemail server that intercepts calls and stores messages for the voicemail service. The network's control processor uses the ATM channel to signal the user's premises equipment to provide an indicator to notify the user at the user's location that the message has been received and is waiting to be retrieved from the voicemail server. In one embodiment, the ATM signaling channel is connected to customer premises equipment (CPE) to provide an indicator to alert the user that a message is ready to be retrieved from the voicemail server.
