Abstract

The network element for exchanging protocol data units over tunnels comprises a detector for detecting indications in protocol data units, an associator for associating tunnels with said indications, a manager for managing said tunnels. by providing a correlator having a retriever and a generator for retrieving information defining known tunnels, and by feeding said manager back to said correlator, which correlator is controlled by said management result, The generator is used to generate information defining a new tunnel. Known tunnels such as configured or automatic tunnels as well as new tunnels such as configured or automatic tunnels can be easily managed and used more efficiently. The manager includes a first encoder coupled to the correlator, a management unit such as a policer or shaper, and a second encoder coupled to the management unit. The tunnel includes a 6to4 tunnel, and the detector detects IPv4 or IPv6 traffic through an indication including an address.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a network element for exchanging protocol data units over a tunnel, comprising [0002] - a detector for detecting indications in protocol data units; [0003] - an associator for associating a tunnel with said indication; and [0004] - a manager for managing said tunnel. [0005] Examples of such network elements are routers, bridges, switches, repeaters, multiplexers, and the like. Background technique [0006] A prior art network element is known from US patent 20040013130, which discloses an arrangement for connecting IPv6 nodes / sites to other IPv6 nodes / sites via IPv4. Additionally, tunnels need to be defined. To utilize a defined tunnel, first an indication (address) of an incoming protocol data unit is detected, and then a tunnel is associated with the detected indication (address). The protocol data unit is then sent through the tunnel after being encapsulated. The tunnels need to be managed to prevent overloadin...
