An optical probe, which is particularly suited to reduce noise in measurements taken on an easily compressible material, such as a finger, a toe, a forehead, an earlobe, or a lip, measures characteristics of the material. A neonatal and adult disposable embodiment of the probe include adhesive coated surfaces to securely affix the probe onto the patient. In addition, the surface of the probe is specially constructed to reduce the effect of ambient noise.

An apparatus and method for sealing pipes or underground structures is provided. In one embodiment, the end of a pipe is sealed by the use of a pipe liner and a sealing member. The sealing member may be a hydrophilic material, a hydrophobic material, a compressible material, or a paste. The sealing member is held in place by a mechanical fastener and a liner is installed adjacent the sealing member and against the wall of the pipe or other structure to be sealed. In another embodiment, a manhole is sealed by the use of a sealing member, a mechanical fastener, and a manhole liner.

The invention is an article of footwear having a sole comprised of one or more support elements formed of a resilient, compressible material. The support elements are designed such that the positions of one or more bands that encircle the exterior surface of the support elements may be altered such that the deflection characteristics of the support elements are changed. An article of footwear is disclosed that includes an upper and a sole structure secured to the upper. The sole structure has a concave element, a footbed, and a core. The concave element has a structure that includes a base portion and sidewalls extending upward from the base portion to define a cavity within the concave element. The footbed is secured to the sidewalls and suspended above at least a portion of the cavity. The footbed includes a plurality of beams that extend across the cavity. The beams are separated by spaces in the footbed, and the beams may be oriented parallel to each other. In this configuration, at least a portion of the beams are independently deflectable into the cavity. A decorative laminate panel comprises compressible objects embedded inside, wherein the compressible objects would be flattened in unnatural shapes under conventional processes. For example, an exemplary decorative laminate product comprises thatch reed, willow reed, bamboo, weeds, grasses, twigs and branches of a tree or bush, beans, and so forth. The present invention discloses a thermal transfer interface having an integrally formed means for fastening and maintaining intimate thermal contact between a heat generating device and a heat-dissipating device. The interface of the present invention includes two components, a compressible thermal transfer component having a first thickness and an adhesive fastening component having a second thickness that is less than the first. The first component, the thermal transfer element, includes a base polymer matrix compound that is loaded with a thermally conducting filler that imparts thermally conductive properties to the net shape moldable material. The polymer base matrix is preferably a highly compressible material such as an elastomer. The second component of the present invention is a pressure sensitive adhesive component. The adhesive is applied adjacent to the thermal transfer element or in an alternating pattern throughout a base field of thermal transfer material. The adhesive component has a thickness that is less than the overall thickness of the thermal transfer material. When, the heat dissipating device with the present invention applied is pressed into contact with a heat generating surface the elastomer is compressed and maintained in the compressed state by the pressure sensitive adhesive material.

In one embodiment, a portable container for a user including a container housing and a speaker attached to a portion of the housing. The area in the interior of the container at least adjacent to the speaker includes a compressible material. The housing is configured to carry a consumable substance. In one embodiment, the container further includes a memory device that is configured to store information that is related to the substance, and/or that is specific to the user. The speaker can output a message based on the information under a predetermined condition. Further, the speaker has a first surface and a second surface, with one of the surfaces directing at the interior of the container housing. A battery assembly includes a casing with a casing wall having inner and outer surfaces and an opening therethrough and being shaped such that a coolant chamber is formed within the casing adjacent to the opening. A sleeve including a compressible material is inserted through the opening. The sleeve is shaped such that a sealing portion thereof is positioned over the outer surface of the casing wall. A battery cell is inserted into the sleeve such that at least a portion of the battery cell is positioned within the coolant chamber. A sealing member is coupled to the casing such that a force is applied onto the sealing portion of the sleeve causing the sealing portion of the sleeve to at least partially compress and seal the coolant chamber.

A liquid cooling manifold assembly for use in the thermal management system of a battery pack is provided. The liquid cooling manifold assembly includes a coolant channel portion through which the coolant channels run, and a dual layer thermal interface interposed between the coolant channel portion and the cells of the battery pack. The outer material layer of the dual layer thermal interface is comprised of an electrically non-conductive, high dielectric material that is preferably tear resistant, deformable and has a high tensile strength and a relatively low surface friction. The inner material layer of the dual layer thermal interface is comprised of a highly compressible material.

The deformable tip is applied to a touch screen to develop a contact patch between the compressible material layer and screen sufficient to trigger an input on the screen, with the amount of force applied to the tip determining the size of the contact patch.
