Embodiment Construction

[0031] Figure 1A Shown in block diagram form is a system 100 configured in accordance with the present invention to implement various high-level operating features. However, the present invention is not limited to Figure 1A The particular system shown, as the invention may be implemented using any other system capable of receiving a video signal, processing the signal and outputting the signal to any suitable component, such as a display device. Additionally, system 100 is not limited to reading data from, or writing data to, any particular type of storage medium, as any storage medium capable of storing digitally encoded data may be used with system 100 .

[0032] System 100 may include: an encoder 110 for encoding an incoming video signal; and a microprocessor 112 for instructing encoder 110 to encode the video signal according to various techniques, some of which will be described later. some explanations. All or part of encoder 110 and microprocessor 112 may be consider...

Abstract

The invention concerns a method (200) and system (100) for encoding a video signal. The method includes the steps of receiving (212) a non-progressive video signal and encoding (214) the non-progressive video signal into at least one group of pictures having at least one prediction source picture and at least one non-prediction source picture. All the non-prediction source pictures are predicted from the at least one prediction source picture such that no non-prediction source picture is predicted from another non-prediction source picture. The method can also include the step of, in response to a forward trick mode command, modifying (217, 218) at least the number of non-prediction source pictures in the group of pictures to convert the non-progressive video signal to a trick mode video signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The arrangement of the present invention relates generally to video systems, and more particularly to video systems for recording or replaying digitally encoded video sequences. Background technique [0002] Devices that facilitate video playback are gaining popularity in today's consumer electronics market. For example, many consumers have purchased digital video disk (DVD) recorders or players to watch pre-recorded programs or to record their favorite programs. Typically, a DVD recorder or player contains a Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) decoder for decoding digitally encoded multimedia data stored on a disc played by the recorder or player. An MPEG video signal to be decoded consists of groups of pictures (GOPs), each of which typically contains an intra (I) picture, a number of predictive (P) pictures, and a number of bidirectional predictive (B) pictures. [0003] During playback of a video signal, some viewers may wish to perform certain t...
