[0032] Referring now to Figures 1-5, a conventional wall-type 110v dual electric socket 10 is generally placed in a recess in a wall, covered by a wall panel, not shown in the drawings, and supplied to homes, offices and other buildings in a traditional manner. Provide 100V power supply service for lamps and small appliances. Receptacle 10 includes an upper receptacle having slots 14 and 16 for receiving plug prongs and a lower receptacle having slots 14 and 16 for receiving electrical plug prongs. Each receptacle socket has a pair of internally spaced parallel electrically conductive contacts or blades, only one 24 of which is shown in FIGS. 2-4. The blade 24 serves two functions, gripping and frictionally retaining the electrical plug prongs in electrical contact with the prongs.
[0033] Figure 5 shows the electrical plug 30 of the present invention. An electrical plug 30 is at the termination of an electrical cable 32 that connects to an electrical device or appliance (n...

Abstract
A safety electrical plug (30) having a two-part prong (34, 36). Each prong has an electrically insulating distal portion (42) and an electrically conductive proximal portion (40). It is necessary to substantially fully insert the plug (30) into a socket (10) to establish an electrical connection between the prongs (34, 36) and the socket contacts (24). This reduces the potential for electric shock to a person or animal that comes into contact with the exposed portion of the prong when the plug is only partially inserted into the socket, and indicates a partially inserted condition if subsequent attempts to operate an appliance connected to the plug fail. The conductive prongs (40, 44, 52a, 54a, 62a, 64a, 72a, 74a, 82a, 84a, 86a) may be non-conductive bases (42, 46, 52, 54, 62, 64, 72, 74, 82 , 84, 86), or the entire proximal portion, optionally provided with a strip of non-conductive material along their edges.
Description
[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 467487, filed May 2,2003. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to electrical plugs, and more particularly to an electrical plug that prevents accidental electric shock when the plug is partially inserted into an electrical socket. Background technique [0004] Prior art electrical appliances such as lights, sweepers, kitchen appliances, power tools, televisions, stereo systems, and many others have electrical cables extending from them. All of these cables carry a terminal plug that plugs into the appliance socket to drive the device. Each plug has two or more prongs that insert into mating slots in the receptacle of the insulating receptacle where they engage conductive contacts. These contacts not only establish electrical contact with the prongs, but also grip the prongs with sufficient force to prevent the plug from being a...
