Embodiment

[0038] An optical sheet set formed of three optical sheets is manufactured by the method of the present invention. The bottom optical sheet and the middle optical sheet included thin BEF manufactured by 3M Company, and the top optical sheet included DBEF manufactured by 3M Company. The adhesive layer is formed with a double-sided adhesive tape (such as #4040 or #4037 from Sumitomo 3M). The size of each membrane is 40 mm x 50 mm. A 1 mm wide strip of adhesive was placed along the periphery of the film to give the adhesive layer a frame-like shape. The outer perimeter of each adhesive layer was approximately 0.5 mm from the perimeter of the film (the outer perimeter of the adhesive layer was within the perimeter of the film).

[0039] The optical sheet set was exposed to room conditions (23°C, 50% relative humidity). Check the appearance of these edges after seven days. There is no accumulation of dust and particles on the edges.

[0040] Next, the optical sheet group was p...

Abstract

An optical sheet is comprised of an optical film (12a, 12b, 12c) laminated onto an adhesive layer (18a, 18b, 18c). The perimeter of the adhesive layer is inset from the perimeter of the optical film. Multiple optical films may be stacked onto each other to form an optical sheet set (10) that efficiently assembles into an optical display. The optical sheet set (10) has no exposed adhesive, which tends to collect dust and particles or transfer to other parts of display.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to optical films. Specifically, the present invention relates to an optical sheet formed by bonding an adhesive and an optical film. [0002] Optical films are used to increase the amount of light exiting an optical display in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the display (or in an axial direction of the display surface). Increasing the amount of on-axis light reduces the energy required to produce the desired on-axis brightness value. This is especially important for optical displays employing battery powered light sources such as those used in laptop computers, calculators, digital watches, cell phones and personal digital assistants. [0003] 3M brand brightness enhancement film is used to solve this problem. The film concentrates "off-axis" light and redirects or "recycles" it so that it is directed toward the viewer in an on-axis direction. In application, the material increases on-axis brightness at ...
