Toroidal continuously variable transmission

Power roller-side concave grooves are opposed to disk-side concave grooves 19, 19 so as to have angles therebetween in a rolling contact area between a peripheral surface of the power roller and a one-side surface 17 of a disk 16 in an axial direction regardless of a transmission gear ratio of a toroidal continuously variable transmission. Accordingly, the disk-side concave grooves 19, 19 are formed so as to have angles with respect to a circumferential direction of the disk 16 when viewed from a normal direction relative to the one-side surface 17 in the axial direction. Meanwhile, the power roller-side concave grooves are formed into a concentric shape (or a spiral shape) about a central shaft of the power roller. As a result, it is possible to prevent a decrease of a contact area in the rolling contact area regardless of the transmission gear ratio.

System and method for executing compute-intensive database user-defined programs on an attached high-performance parallel computer

The invention pertains to a system and method for dispatching and executing the compute-intensive parts of the workflow for database queries on an attached high-performance, parallel computing platform. The performance overhead for moving the required data and results between the database platform and the high-performance computing platform where the workload is executed is amortized in several ways, for example,by exploiting the fine-grained parallelism and superior hardware performance on the parallel computing platform for speeding up compute-intensive calculations,by using in-memory data structures on the parallel computing platform to cache data sets between a sequence of time-lagged queries on the same data, so that these queries can be processed without further data transfer overheads,by replicating data within the parallel computing platform so that multiple independent queries on the same target data set can be simultaneously processed using independent parallel partitions of the high-performance computing platform.A specific embodiment of this invention was used for deploying a bio-informatics application involving gene and protein sequence matching using the Smith-Waterman algorithm on a database system connected via an Ethernet local area network to a parallel supercomputer.

Diagnostic ultrasound transducer

An ultrasound transducer includes an array of PZT elements mounted on a non-recessed distal surface of a backing block. Between each element and the backing block is a conductive region formed as a portion of a metallic layer sputtered onto the distal surface. Traces on a longitudinally extending circuit board—preferably, a substantially rigid printed circuit board, which may be embedded within the block—connect the conductive region, and thus the PZT element, with any conventional external ultrasound imaging system. A substantially “T” or “inverted-L” shaped electrode is thereby formed for each element, with no need for soldering. At least one longitudinally extending metallic member mounted on a respective lateral surface of the backing block forms a heat sink and a common electrical ground. A thermally and electrically conductive layer, such as of foil, transfers heat from at least one matching layer mounted on the elements to the metallic member.

Ventilation system for a protective suit

The present invention relates to a ventilation system for a protective suit for use in hazardous environments. In a further aspect it concerns the protective suit itself. An air purifying respirator draws air from outside the protective suit through a filter, supplies filtered breathing air via a breathing hose to a space within the face piece, and supplies filtered ventilating air via a ventilating hose to the interior of the protective suit. A ventilation valve in the ventilating hose automatically closes only during periods of high breathing demand to counter a pressure drop inside the face piece.

Data protection system, method, and program

The data dividing unit divides data into n pieces. An encoding unit generates m pieces of encoded data composed of a set of a bitmap matrix specifying a plurality pieces of divided data for obtaining exclusive OR (XOR) and exclusive OR data including exclusive OR of the plurality pieces of divided data specified by the bitmap matrix, wherein m is equal to or more than a dividing number n and according to redundancy. A distributed saving unit distributes and saves the m pieces of encoded data to and in storage devices at two or more locations and m or less locations. A decoding unit restores the original data by retrieving restorable k or more pieces of the encoded data among the distributed and saved m pieces of encoded data and subjecting the bitmap matrix of the retrieved encoded data to conversion into a unit matrix.
