Integration of graphic display elements, process modules and control modules in process plants

Graphic displays, which display information about process elements and the manner in which these elements are connected within a process, process modules, which simulate the operation of the elements depicted within the graphic displays and control modules, which perform on-line control activities within a process, may be communicatively connected together to provide a combined control, simulation and display environment that enables enhanced control, simulation and display activities. Smart process objects, which have both graphical and simulation elements, may used to create one or more graphic displays and one or more process simulation modules, each having elements which may communicate with one another to share data between the graphic displays and the process modules. Additionally, function blocks within control modules executed in the process plant may reference the elements within the graphic displays and the process modules (and vice versa) so that control modules may use simulated data developed by the process modules to perform better control, so that process modules may perform better simulation using actual pant data from the control modules, and so that the graphic displays may be used to illustrate actual process data and/or simulated process data as developed by the control modules and the process modules.

Noise-reducing arrangement and method for signal processing

A communication system uses analog and digital circuits along the same data path in a manner that permits the analog circuitry to avoid adverse affects caused by the digital circuitry. Consistent with one embodiment directed to a signal processing system that detects faint incoming signals, the analog and digital circuits are implemented on a single piece of silicon. In such signal processing systems, noise generated by digital processing blocks can degrade the performance of sensitive analog portions. The effective noise is reduced by causing the analog and digital portions of the system to function during separate time intervals. The noise-generating portions of the system may then be turned off during a first data-communication interval while the analog block operates. The data acquired during this period is stored for subsequent processing by the digital portion during a second shorter data-communication interval. Other aspects are applicable to reception arrangements in which part of the incoming signal may be disregarded without significant degradation in performance of the rest of the system, and other aspects are directed to transmission arrangements in which the inverse of the above reception arrangement is used.

Three-dimensional model to facilitate user comprehension and management of information

A computer system and method of presenting information from a body of knowledge to a user utilize a three-dimensional model to facilitate user comprehension and management of both the specific information in the body of knowledge, as well as the contextual relationship of the information within the body of knowledge as a whole. An abstraction stack is utilized to concurrently display information elements associated with different levels of abstraction for a body of knowledge, with the information elements visually linked with one another in a three dimensional workspace to represent the hierarchical arrangement of the information elements within the scope of the overall body of knowledge. In addition, a computer system and method of authoring a body of knowledge permit a user to input information with the contextual relationship of the information within the overall body of knowledge established in an intuitive and efficient manner. An authoring tool facilitates the creation of a body of knowledge by an author by organizing information into one or more information elements associated with various levels of abstraction. Users are concurrently presented with a plurality of user input elements configured to receive input from a user, with each user input element associated with a particular level of abstraction. Once information is received into a particular user input element, an information element is stored in a computer system and associated with the level of abstraction for the user input element.
