[0014]The invention is for a device and method for continuously cleaning, or degreasing, fan impellers in hoods used for exhausting stovetops or cooktops (the former being used in an exemplary manner herein). The hood is typically mounted on a wall against which the stovetop is installed, or suspended over a stovetop installed on an island. The hood can be a simple canopy, or it can include a housing in which the fans are supported. Water is fed to a steam generator, preferably disposed within the housing of a hood. Steam is generated at a pressure above atmospheric pressure, and the pressurized steam is directed by a conduit to the fan impeller, preferably so that the hub, the blades, and any other part of the impeller that normally comes into contact with the cooking fumes being exhausted is impinged by the steam.
