The institution of slots in an airport happens when demand exceeds capacity of the airport. When slots are instituted, they are distributed among the airlines, for example, in series corresponding to a given time at a given day of the week. These slots can be considered long-term slots and are repeated steadily for a 6-month period. At the end of this period, the slot distribution is revised and new airlines can request particular slots. Airlines which use 80% of their slots in the 6-month period are entitled to the same slots in the next period, and the ones which failed this criterion may lose a number of slots.
