Embodiment Construction

[0019] To facilitate an understanding of the principles of the invention, specific language will now be described and specific language will be used to describe the embodiments illustrated in the drawings. It should be understood, however, that the scope of the invention is not limited thereby. Any alternatives and further improvements to the device and the method, as well as further applications of the principles of the invention, are contemplated by those skilled in the art.

[0020] The present invention provides instruments and methods for performing percutaneous surgical procedures, including spinal surgery involving one or more techniques, e.g., laminotomy, laminectomy, foraminotomy Surgery, facetectomy, interbody fusion, nucleus or disc replacement, and implant placement. The surgical procedure is performed using a working channel or access provided by the retractor through the patient's skin and tissue. The surgical field may be viewed at the working end of the retra...

Abstract

Methods and devices retract tissue for minimally invasive surgery in a patient. A retractor includes a working channel formed by a first portion and a second portion. The first and second portions are movable relative to one another from a first configuration for insertion that minimizes trauma to skin and tissue to an enlarged configuration after insertion to further retract skin and tissue in a minimally invasive manner. Instruments are engageable to the first and second portions and operable to move the first and second portions relative to one another.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to instruments and methods for performing tissue distraction and surgical procedures through distracted tissue in a minimally invasive procedure. Background technique [0002] Traditional surgical procedures for in vivo lesions can cause significant damage to the intervening tissues. These procedures often require very long incisions, extensive muscle stripping, prolonged tissue retraction, deinnervation of tissue, and occlusion of blood supply. These procedures require several hours of operating room time and several weeks of post-operative recovery time due to tissue damage during the surgical procedure. In some cases, these invasive procedures can leave permanent scars and pain worse than that associated with surgical intervention. [0003] A significant improvement achieved by the development of percutaneous procedures is the reduction in recovery time and post-operative pain due to the need for minimal dissection of...
