Embodiment Construction

[0019] Fig. 1 shows a kind of fiber optic connector system 10, and it comprises a miniature fiber optic connector 12, and connector 12 can fit in the channel 14 of a terminal coupling 16, to connect connector 12 to another similar connector or Connector device 20. The connector 12 includes a housing 22 having a housing body 24 of generally uniform cross-section in longitudinal forward F and rearward R directions along its length. The housing also includes a master mortise lock 26 attached to the housing body 24 . The primary mortise 26 is the familiar RJ-45 telephone cord mortise originally developed for use with electrical conductors and is now widely used in fiber optic connectors. The primary mortise has a front end 30 which merges with a front portion 32 of the housing body. The mortise lock has a central portion 34 forming a pair of generally rearwardly facing mortise lock shoulders 40 and a rear end forming a mortise lock handle 42 .

Abstract

A secondary lach (50) is provided for an optic fiber connector (12) that has a housing (22) with a housing body (24) and with a primary latch (26) with a front end (30) merging with the housing body and a rear end forming a handle (42) that can be depressed to release the latch and allow the connector to be withdrawn from a terminus coupling (16), the secondary latch preventing unintentional unlatching of the primary latch. The secondary latch includes a sleeve (60) that extends around the housing body and that can slide forward and rearward thereon, and a wedge part (52) that is wedged between a lower surface (56) of the handle and a top surface (54) of the housing body.

Description

field of invention [0001] One type of fiber optic connector includes a housing with the familiar RJ-45 telephone cord style mortise lock. The housing is formed from molded plastic such that one housing body has channels to hold the fiber optic terminals. The housing also forms a mortise lock having a front end merged with the housing body, a middle portion forming a pair of mortise lock shoulders, and a rear portion forming a handle. When the housing is inserted forward into a terminal coupling designed for such a connector, the mortise lock is automatically depressed until the mortise lock shoulder moves behind the mating shoulder, and the mortise lock then pops up, allowing the mortise lock to The locking shoulder is located directly in front of the coupling shoulder. The connector cannot then be removed unless the handle is depressed to depress the mortise lock shoulder so that the mortise lock shoulder is not in line with the coupling shoulder.
