Problems solved by technology

However, existing adaptive cruise control sensor calibration devices do not work with more modern 3D-type visual calibrator systems due to limiting parameters of the 3D visual calibrator and / or the sensor itself

Embodiment Construction

[0030] A system for calibrating on-board sensors, such as adaptive cruise control sensors mounted on the front of a host vehicle, utilizes an image processing calibrator. The calibrator includes one or more image sensors and a processor for processing image signals from the image sensors to calculate calibration parameters, for example calibration parameters relating to the wheels of the vehicle. The calibrator uses two or more optical targets that can be mounted on the vehicle. For sensor-related applications, the calibrator is also used to calibrate one or more optical adjustment members used in the adjustment and calibration of on-board control sensors.

[0031] A first of the adjustment members may be mounted in line with the axis of the sensor and move with the adjustment of the sensor on the vehicle. The sensor calibration system also includes a bracket for positioning across the main course of the host vehicle. The bracket supports the second adjustment member. The m...

Abstract

An image processing type aligner enables proper set-up one of two adjustment elements used to align an adaptive cruise control sensor or the like mounted on a vehicle. One element, such as a laser beam source, is mounted with the sensor on the vehicle; and the other element, such as a mirror, is mounted on a stand. A carrier on the stand positions at least one image sensor of the aligner system. The stand is proportioned in front of the vehicle and manipulated until the aligner indicates that the axis of the adjustment element on the stand is aligned relative to a desired line of the vehicle, for example, the thrust line. A beam of light is transmitted between the two adjustment elements, and the technician adjusts the sensor until the beam position indicates a desired alignment of the sensor relative to the line of the vehicle.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 60 / 468,999, entitled "Sensor Tuning for Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)," filed May 9, 2003, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The subject matter of the present invention relates to calibration techniques and apparatus for adjusting on-board sensors, typically the lead vehicle sensors of an adaptive cruise control system, in part using a 3D vision system such as for host vehicle wheel calibration and other image processing calibrator. Background technique [0004] Adaptive cruise control systems provide adaptive vehicle speed control based on the sensing of another vehicle or object in front of the host vehicle in which the cruise control is operating. Cruise control generally controls the host vehicle speed to minimize the difference between the actual vehicle speed and the speed set by the driver. The ...
