Embodiment Construction

[0015] In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments of the invention. However, it is clear that embodiments of the invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the embodiments of the invention described herein.

[0016] Functional Overview

[0017] A framework is given that enables a database server to process requests to perform stateful operations, such as stateful file system operations, on data stored in the database. A "state operation" is an operation that (1) is requested in a session, and (2) takes into account, in some way, operations previously performed in that session. The execution of certain operations affects the execution of state operations. For example, the result of performing a database operation ma...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method and device for processing file system operations at the database server side. A request for file system operations on resources stored in the database is received at the server system side. The NFS protocol can be used to perform this request. The request may include state identification data identifying state information associated with the request. State information associated with the request is retrieved within the database system based on the state identification data. The status information is information describing the operation status of a requester for a specific file. The item request is then processed based at least in part on the status identification. A database management system can be used to handle file system operations for accessing any data such as files, relational data, and object-relational data.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method and a device for performing file operations in a database management system. Background technique [0002] Data can be stored in many types of storage mechanisms such as databases and file servers. Each storage mechanism usually has its own access method. For example, the SQL protocol is commonly used to perform operations on databases, while the NFS protocol is generally used to perform operations on file systems. The SQL protocol is an ANSI standard for accessing and manipulating data stored in databases. The NFS protocol is a distributed file system protocol that supports file operations on files across a network. NFS is a well-known standard for sharing files between UNIX hosts. In the NFS protocol, file system operations are performed on files using file handles, which are identifiers that identify specific files. The current version (version 4) of NFS as specified in RFC 3010 supports additional features ove...
