Server-group messaging system for interactive applications

A method for deploying interactive applications over a network containing host computers and group messaging servers is disclosed. The method operates in a conventional unicast network architecture comprised of conventional network links and unicast gateways and routers. The hosts send messages containing destination group addresses by unicast to the group messaging servers. The group addresses select message groups maintained by the group messaging servers. For each message group, the group messaging servers also maintain a list of all of the hosts that are members of the particular group. In its most simple implementation, the method consists of the group server receiving a message from a host containing a destination group address. Using the group address, the group messaging server then selects a message group which lists all of the host members of the group which are the targets of messages to the group. The group messaging server then forwards the message to each of the target hosts. In an interactive application, many messages will be arriving at the group server close to one another in time. Rather than simply forward each message to its targeted hosts, the group messaging server aggregates the contents of each of messages received during a specified time period and then sends an aggregated message to the targeted hosts. The time period can be defined in a number of ways. This method reduces the message traffic between hosts in a networked interactive application and contributes to reducing the latency in the communications between the hosts.

Personal message service with enhanced text to speech synthesis

A server in a network gathers textual information, such as news items, E-mail and the like. From that information, the server develops or identifies messages for use by individual subscribers. The same server that accumulates the text messages or another server in the network converts the textual information in each message to a sequence of speech synthesizer instructions. The converted messages, containing the sequences of speech synthesizer instructions, are transmitted to each identified subscriber's terminal device. A synthesizer in the terminal generates an audio waveform signal, representing the speech information, in response to the instructions. In the preferred embodiment, the terminals utilize concatenative type speech synthesizers, each of which has an associated vocabulary of stored fundamental sound samples. The instructions identify the sound samples, in order. The instructions also provide parameters for controlling characteristics of the signal generated during waveform synthesis for each sound sample in each sequence. For example, the instructions may specify the pitch, duration, amplitude, attack envelope and decay envelope for each sample. The division of the text to speech synthesis processing between the server and the terminals places the cost of the front end processing in the server, which is a shared resource. As a result, the hardware and software of the terminal may be relatively simple and inexpensive. Also, it is possible to upgrade the quality of the synthesis by upgrading the server software, without modifying the terminals.

Conference layout control and control protocol

A teleconferencing system includes a network. The system includes a plurality of nodes in communication with each other to form a conference. Each node having a video display with a display layout, at least one of the nodes individually controlling at least partially the display layout of each node in the conference with a specific format able to be unique for each node. A method for providing a teleconference including the steps of forming a conference with a plurality of nodes in communication with each other through a network. Each node having a video display with a display layout. There is the step of controlling individually with at least one of the nodes at least partially the display layout of each node in the conference with a specific format able to be unique for each node. A teleconferencing node. A teleconferencing system includes a network. The system includes a plurality of nodes in communication with each other through the network to form a conference. Each node communicating only a change to the other nodes when the change occurs. A method for conducting a telecommunications conference between at least three parties includes the steps of establishing a conference between the party. There is the step of making a change to the conference. There is the step of communicating only the change to the parties.

Methods and systems for the rapid detection of concealed objects

The present invention provides for an improved scanning process having a first stage to rapidly identify a threat location and a second stage to accurately identify the nature of the threat. The improved scanning process maintains a high degree of accuracy while still providing an operationally desirable high throughput. The present invention also uses improved processing techniques that enable the substantially automated detection of threats and decrease the dependence on operator accuracy. One embodiment of the present invention provides an apparatus for identifying an object concealed within a container. It comprises a first stage inspection system having at least two X-ray projection systems to generate a first set of data and a plurality of processors in data communication with the first stage inspection system. The processors process the first set of data to generate at least two images. The two images are used to identify at least one target region from the two images. A second stage inspection system is then used to generate an inspection region which is then positioned relative to the target region and made to at least partially physically coincide with the target region. A second set of data is produced specifically from the inspection region, data which have a high degree of specificity for the material in the inspection region.
