Embodiment Construction

[0036] For purposes of example, the present invention is described with reference to a business planning system, such as a business financial or budget planning system. The techniques described here can be readily applied to other software systems that use multidimensional data, including other large enterprise software systems. Examples of other enterprise software systems include order management systems, inventory management systems, sales force management systems, business intelligence tools, enterprise reporting tools, project and resource management systems, and other enterprise software systems.

[0037] Typically, the enterprise planning system 14 is capable of aligning and automating the enterprise's top-down goals and detailed bottom-up forecasts. The enterprise planning system 14 implements and manages the enterprise planning process, which generally includes three functions: (1) modeling, (2) contribution, and (3) reconciliation.

Abstract

Techniques are described for publishing multidimensional data from an enterprise software system. A relational database schema is automatically created for storing the multidimensional data. The database schema may be a relational star schema as described herein. The techniques may include processes for automatically producing the database schema based on the organization of the multidimensional data cube, and for populating the database schema with data from the data cube. The database schema may be used for reporting the multidimensional enterprise data, or may serve as a staging area to move the enterprise data toward a data warehouse within an enterprise software system. The reporting schema may support heterogeneous data types and heterogeneous formats. The reporting schema may also contain metadata that describes the schema, allowing for enhanced interpretation of the database schema. Also described is a process for automatically generating a reporting model from the database schema.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to software systems, and more particularly to computing environments for enterprise business planning. Background technique [0002] Enterprise software systems are typically complex, large-scale systems that support many, eg, hundreds or thousands, concurrent users. Examples of enterprise software systems include financial planning systems, budget planning systems, order management systems, inventory management systems, sales force management systems, business intelligence tools, enterprise reporting tools, project and resource management systems, and other enterprise software systems. [0003] In many cases, users may wish to publish data from one enterprise software system to other third-party software tools. For example, a user may wish to publish data from a financial planning system to reporting and analysis software. However, many enterprise software systems, such as financial planning systems, store data in the ...
