Embodiment Construction

[0017] For purposes of simplicity and illustration, the principles of the described embodiments will be described. However, those of ordinary skill in the art readily know that the same principles can be equally applied and implemented in all types of network systems, and any such changes will not depart from the true spirit and scope of the embodiments. Furthermore, in the following detailed description, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate specific embodiments. Electrical, mechanical, logical, and structural changes may be made to the embodiments without departing from the spirit and scope of the embodiments.

[0018] According to one embodiment, in a network, a distributed information service is provided for discovering services. The information service provides users with information about services available through the network. The user queries the information service for information about desired services available via the network. The info...

Abstract

Nodes (130) in a network (210) are operable to provide an information service. A set of the nodes having a highest workload are identified by routing a list of workloads (712) for the nodes through the network (210) to a final destination (701). Each node receiving the list (712) determines whether to include a workload of a respective node in the list (712).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to networks, and more particularly, the present invention relates to the workload of nodes in the network. Background technique [0002] Large networks, such as the Internet, can provide the infrastructure for many peer-to-peer network systems, which are being used to provide various services to users. For example, media services, such as streaming and decoding; and web services for e-commerce, such as airline and hotel reservations; or grid computing services for computing and data are all available over large networks. [0003] A fundamental challenge in effectively utilizing these network services is finding desired services efficiently and quickly in large networks, such as the Internet. The challenge of discovering services is complicated by a number of factors. For example, if a centralized information service such as that used in a peer-to-peer file-sharing system is used to facilitate such discovery, th...
