Problems solved by technology

For example, removing a rootkit in safe mode may require more than a dozen operations
Additionally, new malicious drivers appear that are migrated to boot drivers
That is, the earliest stages of operating system startup are infected, whereas most antivirus and other protection software start much later in the operating system's processing

Embodiment Construction

[0076] In the following description, reference is made to the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof, and which illustrate several embodiments. It is understood that other embodiments may be utilized and structural and operational changes may be made.

[0077] Figure 2 shows details of a computing device 200 in accordance with some embodiments. The computing device 200 (e.g., a host computer) includes one or more central processing units 204 (CPUs) (e.g., processors), volatile memory 206, non-volatile memory 208 (e.g., disk drives, optical drives, tape drive, etc.) and one or more network adapters 240. The one or more network adapters 240 may be said to be coupled into a communication path 270 (eg, a network).

[0078] The memory 206 stores an operating system 210 including an OS kernel 212 . Memory 206 also stores EFI runtime components 230 . In some embodiments, the EFI runtime component 230 is implemented as firmware. In some other embodiments, the EFI runtime ...

Abstract

The name of the present invention is "method and device capable of storing code and data". Provided are a techniques for determining whether tagged memory is available. In response to determining that tagged memory is available, it is determined whether an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) system is implemented. In response to determining that the EFI system is implemented, object descriptors for EFI runtime code and data are allocated and one or more call points from non-tagged memory to tagged memory are provided for use at runtime. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods, systems and devices capable of storing code and data. Background technique [0002] Operating systems provide different levels of access to resources. Said access levels may be associated with "rings". For example, ring 0 is usually the access level with the most privileges. Other rings include ring 1, ring 2 and ring 3. For example, in operation, a program running on a higher numbered ring (eg, ring 3) requests access to a network that would normally be a constrained resource for a lower numbered ring (eg, ring 0). The ring is used to prevent erroneous or malicious software (e.g. spyware) running in ring 1 from performing disruptive operations (e.g. accessing passwords on the computer) that could be performed by ring 0 functions reserved for device drivers . [0003] An Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) system is broadly described as a system that is responsible for the Power On Self Test (POST) process...
